My catch 22: reading

Many of you know I started a goal in November to always have my nose in a book (on top of the scriptures of course). You can see my shelf and link to shelfari link to see favorites and other list. I have been doing great. Since then I have read: Angela's Ashes, The Secret Life of Bee's, The Old Man and The Sea, half of Measures of a Man, James and the Giant Peach with Madisen, and last night finished Kite Runner. I for some unknown reason cannot get my self to read the biggest thing since sliced bread- the Vampire series, twilight, eclipse and something. I next am going to read God's and Generals.

What is the problem. I apparently have no self control. I read 20 pages of kite runner earlier in the week. Last night I put the kids down and cuddled under my down comforter to read. At 1 am Ben came to bed (my husband), I kept on reading. 3:00 am Benson woke up, Oh yeah I rushed him to bed without giving him his last bottle. Poor kid he was so hungry. I fed him and cuddled with now him and my book under the comforter.

At 4:30 am, 3 hours from getting up and starting the race to prepare for church, I put Bence in his crib with a tear stained face. I finished the last chapter and quickly dozed of.

It is probably a good thing for my kids that reading is not second nature to me. they would be ignored hungry bedraggled kids. My question is how do you get immersed in a book, and put it down. I know I am going to get the duh Kim you put it down and turn of the light. yeah obviously that worked last night!!!!

So on that note. besides the vampire series and Harry potter which against my families desires I'm just not into it, any recommendations !?!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the Vampire series is for hopeless romantics that have never delved into real literature. It's TEEN fiction. If you've read Gone with the Wind, you can't read something as mindless as the vampire books. You'll feel like you're twelve.

If you're looking for some bubble gum for the brain may I suggest: "We're just like you, only prettier" It's HILARIOUS. I also recently read "Born Standing Up" which was quite good and a fast read. Oh, and the "Innocent Man"- by Girsham. It's a true story.

Kim,
I already talked to you, but I thought I could add. Ask DAve I don't have much self control when it comes to reading, I will hold a book all day long and read every chance I get, if it's a good one.

Have you ever read Little Women by Louisa MAy Alcott, I like that, I am really into classics. Scarlet Pimpernel, The tale of two cities etc. Also I love historical like 1776, Life and Death in Shanghai, John Adams, WAshington. I guess I am pretty eclectic. It depends on my mood. John Grisham is good at intellectual thrillers, I like to figure them out before the end. Tom Clancy is the same way.

I love books, you can borrow some of mine.

Me like Britt would recommend classics- they are so good for the mind. Go to your local library and see what they have. For an easy page turner I have read a lot of Nicolas Sparks- just finished "At First Sight" and I think it is the best one of his. I also like JOhn Grishams. I love Dr. Mehmet Oz's Book: You the Owners MAnual, You: Staying Young and You: On a Diet-- very cool informative books on how the body works and how it is a living miracle. You also receive good tips for staying heathly-- I think helped me a lot during my last pregnancy more than anything else. He makes the medical jargen fun to read. Hry -- it was good to see you last month- hope your christmas was well- sorry I got hysterical about in- laws at the end- very different people...

PS Both the vampire series and Harry Potter are super lame. The best book I've read lately is Orson Scott Card's Enchantment. In fact, I had to read it twice back to back. I've never done that before.
